chp 9 preview
“I’ll do better next time,” Korra mumbles after a long pause, her tongue thick with words: this always happens what did we expect why do you have to push so hard I can’t think with you around Dad why do you have to be like this why do we have to do this every time. Every time. A day full of water whips that twisted and fell, wild like kites on cut strings; water walls cracked with seaweed, waves she drew around her and threw off like robes of grey glass, Korra do it again yes Dad but I don’t know what I’m doing wrong just do it again –
“Yes, you will,” Noatak says, with a flat note of finality, and Korra grinds her teeth together as her throat fills with a dull hotness. She doesn’t have the voice to tell him anything else he wants to hear.
Several minutes elapse, and a few more, and then Noatak gets up and walks off down the beach, each footstep kicking up a little burst of sand. Korra sighs as he leaves: finally, she can be angry alone.
I’m one scene away from finishing the chapter but the scene in question has an allowance of 3,000 words and a mandate for some very heavy emotional punches and a Major Plot Point so pls bear with me (if you’re still following this i.e. if you still care)
Aww, so much fluffy cute stuff! Air Kids! Happy Makorra! Noatak and Korra having a vaguely-normal father-daughter relationship! =D …the next chapter is going to be made of pain, isn’t it? >.>haaaaaahahahahaa h HAHAAAAAAAHAHAHAAAAAAAAHAAHA HA HAAAA

I. ENCOUNTERS
Things Korra knows: Equalism, chi-blocking, the location of each chakra like secrets she has hidden herself; what fire and earth are (poetry in a language she is just beginning to speak), cracked, dry-skinned anger. The hopeful longing of waking up with the warmth of someone else, but only the idea of it, a whisper, lingering like a half-heard tune. And her father, she knows her father - oceanic endurance, the invulnerability of winter. His expression carved in stone as he hammers power into himself, palms braced against the floor, muscles rolling in his arms and back, weakness dripping from his skin as he counts: eighty-seven, eighty-eight, eighty-nine… And then he turns over, bends his knees, arms crossed to his shoulders, and begins a new set. Every morning. Strength requires clockwork discipline.
Things she doesn’t know: the tone in Noatak’s voice when, as she is definitely not using firebending to light the burners for breakfast, there is an agh! and a muffled thump and then her name -
“Korra?! Korra!!”

How is DLB coming and does the lieutenant know that Korra is the avatar? Since Amon had her show Tarrlok
I am working - I really am! - on chapter 8, albeit slowly, because of college.
And: at this point in time, the lieutenant does not know that Korra is the Avatar; Korra showed Tarrlok her bending out of self-defense and Amon let it slide because he hoped Tarrlok would spread that rumor and cause some fear and moral panic among benders. But Tarrlok didn’t, for that exact reason.
fun fact: he went after mako and bolin a) because they messed up his rally, b) because they broke korra’s ribs and left her bleeding and in shock, and c) like hell he’s going to let two unimportant nobodies force him to play his ace before he wants to
It’ll all come together though, don’t worry.
Is there going to be any flashbacks of little Korra and Amon after he kidnapped her and stuff?
YES but not in “dream of the lotus in bloom”
there will be a companion piece called “dream of the sun in dusk” from Noatak’s perspective detailing stuff from when she’s three to right before the narrative starts in DLB

Noatak is so furious firebending had her daughter, who did not realize until he saw the first tears in her blue eyes … It felt so guilty to raise their voice against her small.
